Risks Associated With Dermabrasion

If carried out by a board certified plastic surgeon, dermabrasion is generally a very safe procedure. Excessive exposure to the sun too soon after dermabrasion is the most common way for something to go wrong. It can cause permanent darkening of the skin, as well as hyperpigmentation. Tiny white heads are also common following the procedure, but these will usually go away with time. Enlarged skin pores are also common, yet once the swelling goes down the pores will return back to their average size. Some patients may develop excessive scar tissue. If this happens, steroids can be injected to soften the scar tissue.

Patients treating acne through dermabrasion should not go through with the procedure when their acne is at its worst. This can cause serious infections. Those who are on Accutaine should speak with their doctors prior to the procedure considering studies have shown unusual scarring for these patients.

If you are someone who frequently gets cold sores you should speak with your doctor. He or she may prescribe antiviral pills prior to the procedure.
