Dr. Francis R. Johns graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in pre-medicine, and was inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society. He went on to graduate Valedictorian of his class as he earned his D.M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where he was inducted into the selective Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Society. Dr. Johns then received his M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he graduated with honors and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society.

Dr. Johns completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he received the first place award in the Straumann Resident Research National Competition for two consecutive years. From there, Dr. Johns completed his plastic surgery residency training at the renowned University of Virginia, Health Center, where he received the first place award in the Virginia American College of Surgeons Research Competition for his work in breast reconstruction. He also has more than twenty publications to his credit.
