Anesthesia for the Rhinoplasty Patient

Anesthesia for your rhinoplasty procedure

Depending upon the extent of the work to be done, rhinoplasty can be performed either using local anesthesia or using general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon may ask you which you prefer.

Local vs. General Anesthesia for Rhinoplasty

If your rhinoplasty is done while you are under local anesthesia, you will be sedated.  Your nose and the surrounding area of your face will be numbed.  You will be awake during surgery, but relaxed to the point that you may not remember the procedure.  You will not feel the pain of the surgery.

If general anesthesia is used for your rhinoplasty, you will be completely out, sleeping throughout the entire process.

Safety Precautions

You will be given specific instructions of foods to avoid, medications to avoid and other things you need to do before you are anesthetized.  Many problems with anesthesia arise from interactions, so be careful to follow the directions your doctor gives you regarding pre-op do's and don'ts.
