Recovery from Laser Skin Resurfacing

Recovery times for laser skin rejuvenation vary depending on the extent of the procedure, the type and power of the laser, and whether the procedure is ablative or non-ablative. Because there are so many variables, you should ask your plastic surgeon about the recovery you should expect from the specific treatment you will undergo. Generally, however, the more aggressive your treatment is, the longer your recovery will be. We describe both mild and longer recoveries below.

Recovering from Milder Laser Resurfacing Procedures

Mild treatments such as those with low-powered fractional or non-ablative lasers typically have very fast recovery times, generally a few days to no more than one week. This type of treatment does not result in heavy peeling, oozing or crusting of the skin as deeper, more aggressive treatments do.

Recovering from More Aggressive Laser Rejuvenation Treatments

Aggressive laser treatments require a longer recovery period. Typically the skin will go through various stages of redness, oozing, crusting and peeling for one week. After that, the skin may remain pink for up to another two weeks. After an aggressive treatment, your plastic surgeon may ask you to wash your face frequently with a mild cleanser and apply a moisturizing cream or balm. You may also need to use gauze to dab or bandage any oozing areas. You may use ice packs to relieve the pain and keep the swelling down. In very aggressive treatments, you may require oral analgesics for a few days to help relieve the pain.
