What To Expect During Your Facelift

The facelift procedure - What to expect during facelift surgery

The day of your facelift

Before you leave for your surgery, make one last check of you "facelift recovery area" to make sure you have everything you'll need. You can see some suggestions on FaceForum's Facelift Recovery Area page.

You will need a ride to and from the surgery center. Write down the contact numbers for the person who is picking you up after your facelift and taking you home. Give a copy of the telephone numbers to the person who checks you in before surgery. That way, the nurses or the plastic surgeon can get in touch with your ride if they need to.

You will be given a time to report to the surgical facility. Typically, it is an hour or so before the actual scheduled facelift surgery time. This is to give you time to complete paperwork and any last minute preoperative preparation.

Depending on whether you are having just a facelift, or a facelift combined with other cosmetic procedures, you can expect the surgery to take anywhere from two to six hours. Your plastic surgeon's office will give you an estimate ahead of time, so you can brief the person who is taking you home after your surgery.

Facelift surgery procedure description

The description of the surgery in the following paragraphs is a generalization for illustrative purposes. The approach that your plastic surgeon takes in performing your facelift may vary, depending upon the amount of work that needs to be done, the condition and structure of your face, and your surgeon's preferred technique. If you want detailed information on your particular procedure, just ask your surgeon.

Your surgeon will make incisions in the natural creases to minimize noticeable scarring. Incisions are usually made in front of your ears, along the temple. The incision then continues around and behind the ear. Through this incision, your plastic surgeon will be able to reach the muscle and connective tissue. In most cases, your plastic surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying fat and muscle. If you have excess facial fat, it may be removed by trimming it away or using a liposuction-like technique. Your underlying muscles will then be tightened to give a firmer foundation. Your plastic surgeon will then re-drape your skin, trimming away any excess. If you need to have your neck worked on during your facelift, your plastic surgeon may make an additional incision under your chin so that there is access to your neck.

Once the facelift surgery is complete, your plastic surgeon will close the incisions using very fine stitches or special clips. A temporary drainage tube may be inserted to drain off any excess blood or fluid. You will be bandaged to help minimize swelling. Your incisions may be covered in an ointment or cream to help with healing.
