Why Should I Have Microdermabrasion?

What can microdermabrasion do for me? - Why do patients have the microdermabrasion procedure?

Microdermabrasion is a very popular cosmetic procedure. It is, in fact, the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed today. (We know that you're curious. The #1 non-surgical cosmetic procedure is BOTOX® injections.)

Why should I have microdermabrasion?

If you have small wrinkles and fine age lines, microdermabrasion may be for you.  Microdermabrasion can be used to treat acne scars, age spots and the fine lines that may be present at the outside of a patient's eyes (crow's feet.)

Microdermabrasion is ideally suited for a person who has aged skin or skin that has been damaged by overexposure to the sun.  Microdermabrasion treatments polish and soften the skin, reducing fine lines on the face.

Which areas of the face are treated by the microdermabrasion process?

The process is used to treat areas subject to fine lines and wrinkles.  Most often, these are the areas the cheeks, the forehead, and the area around the mouth.

In addition to fighting lines and wrinkles, dermabrasion can help to smooth and reduce the prominence of pigment problems like age spots, brown spots,  and melanosis.

Microdermabrasion for acne

Since microdermabrasion provides a very deep level of exfoliation, it is sometimes used to treat acne.  When used for acne, microdermabrasion is done in concert with deep suction to unclog the patient's pores.

When would microdermabrasion be a bad idea?

Not all wrinkles can be treated using microdermabrasion. If you have deeply wrinkled lines or deep acne scars (pocks), then microdermabrasion may not be a strong enough treatment.  The best way to find out what microdermabrasion can and cannot do for you is to have a one-on-one consultation with your plastic surgeon.
